Styrene Monomer

Description

Styrene monomer (SM), also called vinylbenzene, has the formula C8H8 and is a colourless, oily liquid with a sweet smell. In industry it is made mainly by dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene, and it is one of the most widely used monomers in the polymer industry; polystyrene and many copolymers, rubbers and resins are made from it.

At normal temperature, styrene slowly polymerizes by itself, so an inhibitor (usually TBC) is added and it must be stored in a cool place, away from heat, light and sources of ignition. The material is flammable, and the instructions in the safety data sheet (SDS) must be followed during transport and storage.
